Obama Allowing Torturous conditions and force-feeding of detainees cleared for release at Guantanamo Bay

This should be more in the news, but mostly the Main Stream Media has been silent about it.  Well, I will NOT be silent. Remember Obama’s promise to close Guantanamo Bay?  Well, as he found out, it is really not that simple. However he has another little problem that has not been highly publicized. Well, it hasn’t been publicized on television really. Many of the Guantanamo bay detainees are on hunger strike.  In fact of the 165 or so detainee’s 100 of them are on hunger strike.
Lest we assume this is one of those things that will pass, with the thought, “They will eat when they get hungry”, 22 of them are now being force-fed to keep them alive. They are literally starving themselves to death. Now normally, I wouldn’t worry about such a thing, I mean if someone would rather die than face the specter of indefinite detention in Gitmo Hell, I would say let them have their way. However, the fact is 85 of these people have been “cleared for release”.
This is my problem with this: If they have been cleared for release, WHY are they still languishing in Gitmo? This is Obama’s dirty little secret. Not only couldn’t he close Gitmo, but the prisoners that have been cleared, have no place to go.  We don’t want them running free in the U.S. and many of them wont be allowed back in their own countries. Obama, who is supposed to be a great humanitarian, and has received a Nobel prize, is allowed horrific conditions in his GITMO hell. The red cross has become concerned, and tells about the conditions in Gitmo. Mind you this is the conditions in the prison for people who have been cleared for release.  A group of U.N. human rights officials has demanded an end to the force-feeding, saying it is a form of torture. “Hunger strikers should be protected from all forms of coercion, even more so when this is done through force and in some cases through physical violence,” the group said in a statement last week.
Guantanamo Bay detainees
It has become such an international scandal that Obama addressed it publicly again “The idea that we would still maintain forever a group of individuals who have not been tried, that is contrary to who we are. It is contrary to our interests and needs to stop,” Yet, it continues. This great country who is so concerned about the way prisoners in the Middle East are treated are literally allowing people who were cleared for release to be forcibly and with violence, to be held down and be force-fed. You may wonder what force feeding entails.
Fayiz al-Kandari, one of the detainees who has been cleared for release describes the feeling. First, there is the sensation of the tube passing near his sinuses as it is pushed through his nose and into his throat, which causes his eyes to water. Then there is an intense burning and gagging sensation as it goes down the throat. Finally, when the tube enters the stomach there is a strong urge to vomit. However, for al-Kandari the worst is yet to come. The most painful moment of all comes when the food forced into his stomach brings a return of the hunger pain that had mostly receded.  This is what we are doing to people who Obama has declared fit for release.
You can’t have it both ways Obama. They are either cleared for release or they aren’t. You can’t indefinitely torture people, who you have declared are safe for release.  How can our government claim to be humane, while we allow the torture of people who have been “released”? The hypocrisy makes me ill. It is time for Obama to put up or SHUT up. Either these detainees are free or they are not free. If they are not, then it is time to bring them to justice, instead of this costly upkeep and now medical force-feeding that continues to keep Gitmo a source of shame.
